Trump is likely to postpone the ban on TikTok in the US on Monday

“A 90-day extension is something we’re most likely going to do because it’s appropriate,” Trump said in an interview. “If I decide to do so, I will probably announce it on Monday,” he added.

The application, which is owned by a Chinese company, attracted almost half of all Americans. After the court’s decision, she announced that if the government of outgoing President Joe Biden does not provide clear assurances that it will not enforce the law leading to the ban on TikTok, the network will go silent in the US on Sunday.

Under a law passed last year and upheld by a court on Friday, the platform has until Sunday to either sever ties with its parent company ByteDance, which is based in China, or cease operations in the US to address concerns that it poses a threat to national security.

In theory, the law requires Internet providers and application stores such as Google Play and the App Store to block downloads and updates from Sunday midnight. According to TikTok, in addition, the network in the US is dependent on local infrastructure, the operation of which is also problematic under the law.

The White House said on Friday that the application should remain available to Americans, but due to the timing of the Supreme Court’s decision, the matter should be dealt with only by the next administration, which will assume its powers on Monday, January 20. The White House called TikTok’s warning a trick and said that it saw no reason why TikTok or other companies should take any steps before the new government takes office on Monday.

Perplexity AI is interested

On Saturday, the company Perplexity AI officially signed up to be interested in the TikTok platform in the United States. Parent company ByteDance submitted an offer for Perplexity AI and TikTok US to merge and create a new entity together with New Capital Partners. An informed source told the server of the CNBC news television.

The new business structure would allow most of ByteDance’s current investors to keep their stakes, so Perplexity would get more videos. Perplexity AI is a start-up company specializing in artificial intelligence (AI) search, competing with OpenAI and Google.

At the beginning of last year, the value of Perplexity AI was approximately USD 500 million (CZK 12.3 billion). By the end of the year, however, it had grown to about nine billion USD, mainly thanks to the growing interest of investors in generative AI.

A possible transaction between Perplexity AI and ByteDance would likely take several months. ByteDance has publicly indicated that it will not sell TikTok US. Perplexity believes that it could succeed with its offer because it is more of a merger than a sale, the source told CNBC.

Chinese short video sharing app TikTok says it has more than 170 million users in the US. That is roughly half of the population of the United States. Uncertainty about the future of the application has caused many users, mostly younger, to move to alternatives, including the Chinese application RedNote.

The owner of ByteDance is a private company, and institutional investors such as BlackRock and General Atlantic have a 60 percent stake in it. The founders own 20 percent of the company, the remaining 20 percent are owned by the employees. The company has more than 20,000 employees in the US, Reuters reported.

Analysts estimated the value of TikTok at USD 50 billion (more than CZK 1.2 trillion). Reuters reported that a number of people interested in the company appeared, including the former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, Frank McCourt. According to the media, Beijing also discussed the sale of TikTok’s American activities to billionaire Elon Musk, but the company denied this.
