Tibet and Nepal were hit by a strong earthquake. Almost 130 dead are reported

The earthquake struck around 9:05 a.m. local time (4:05 CET) and its epicenter should be located about 100 kilometers north of Tibet’s border with Nepal at a depth of approximately 10 kilometers, according to television station DW.

The tremors affected the second largest Tibetan city of Šigace. Strong tremors were also felt in the Nepalese metropolis of Kathmandu, where people fled their homes out of fear. Data on casualties in the mountainous regions of Nepal are not yet available. The earthquake was also felt in Bhutan and India.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has no information that Czechs were among those affected by the earthquake in Nepal and Tibet. 16 Czechs in Nepal and 71 in China are registered in Drozd.

In the following hour, there were several other tremors, the strongest of which had a magnitude of 4.4 on the Richter scale. “Dingri County and surrounding areas experienced very strong tremors and many buildings near the epicenter collapsed,” Chinese state television said.

In 2015, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 struck Nepal, killing about 9,000 people. The most destructive earthquake in China in the last several decades affected the province of Sichuan in May 2008, where, according to Reuters, 70,000 people died.
