They kissed Zelensky’s ring. Fico cannot compare with the opposition’s trip to Kyiv

The Prime Minister threatened Kyiv that he would veto the European Union’s financial aid to Ukraine, which has been fighting Russia for almost three years. Fico stated this in a post on Facebook that he published late on Saturday evening.

“I have absolutely no problem with the fact that the delegation of Progressive Slovakia went to Kyiv. When you have no authority or responsibility, you can act even on a space station on Mars,” he claimed.

At the same time, however, he accused the opposition politicians of “kissing Zelensky’s ring”, i.e. making a gesture of subordination, and thus promised him, in the event that they came to power, support for Ukraine’s membership in NATO and the participation of Slovak soldiers in Western troops, the deployment of which According to Fico, Ukrainian is now practically spoken all over the world. He considers this to be the most dangerous aspect of the opposition party’s trip to Kyiv on Friday.

“The government I lead will never support Ukraine’s membership in NATO, because it would only lead to the third world war. Robert Fico is the Slovak prime minister, not a Ukrainian servant,” Fico declared again. “The government will also never propose sending troops to Ukraine to turn their weapons against the Russian Federation,” he said.

On the side of Gašpar

Prime Minister Fico sided with Deputy Speaker of the Parliament Tibor Gašpar (Smér), who on Friday told the public Slovak Television and Radio that the EU and NATO are evolving over time, and admitted the possibility of Slovakia leaving the EU.

According to Fico, Slovakia must prepare for crisis situations that the EU may find itself in in a very short period of time. “Tibor Gašpar accurately named the developing situation. Just as the Warsaw Pact fell within a year, world events can also send the EU and NATO to the history books. It is true that the EU and NATO are our living space, but no one will prevent us from warning Slovakia of various risks,” said Fico.

Regarding Slovakia’s membership in the EU and NATO, Gašpar literally said: “Perhaps some basic issues or principles of functioning that existed at the time when we entered them are changing, and therefore the door must remain open for the situation that we would eventually consider last resort, such as withdrawal from the EU,” said the Deputy Speaker of the Slovak Parliament for Smér.

He additionally explained that Slovakia joined the EU on the basis of a successful referendum, and the possible withdrawal must also be decided in a referendum. “Citizens of Slovakia must decide where and how they want to live, not politicians,” he added.

Gašpar was a member of the Slovak parliamentary delegation that visited Moscow this week, where they met with several Russian representatives, including the Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation, Sergey Lavrov.

The opposition wants EU and NATO membership in the constitution

In response to Gašpar’s words, the opposition party Svoboda a solidarita (SaS) announced that it would like to enshrine the country’s membership in the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance in the Slovak constitution.

“We consider it (constitutional enshrining) to be important at a time when representatives of this coalition are flirting with Russia,” pointed out SaS chairman Branislav Gröhling on Facebook. “They would tear us out of the most advanced economic area and from the defense association, which is the only one capable of guaranteeing our borders where they are,” added the chairman of SaS.

The party called on all opposition and coalition MPs to support the proposal. “This is not about politics, but about the survival of the Slovak Republic,” emphasized SaS.

Gašpar’s statement was described by Michal Šimečka, the chairman of the opposition movement Progresivní Slovakia (PS), after returning from Kyiv, as extremely dangerous. “Before that, we warned for a long time. Robert Fico is preparing the ground to take us out of Europe. It is no coincidence that Mr. Gašpar said this a few days after his return from Moscow,” pointed out Šimečka at the press conference, which he also published on Facebook.

The government party Hlas-social democracy rejected any debate about the withdrawal of Slovakia from the EU and NATO. In this context, President Peter Pellegrini, who founded the Hlas party, recalled last year’s statement by the highest constitutional officials, in which they promised to support Slovakia’s unquestionable membership in the EU and NATO.
