The US suspends strategic dialogue with Kosovo: Government actions have increased tensions and instability

The US Embassy in Pristina announced that the strategic dialogue with Kosovo has been suspended indefinitely.

The decision, the US Embassy explains, has come after the actions of the Kurti Government, which have increased tensions and instability. The strategic dialogue aimed at strengthening economic and diplomatic ties between the two countries, while according to the US, the latest statements of the Prime Minister in office Albin Kurti “have presented challenges to the progress made over the years”.

“The United States has suspended their planned strategic dialogue with Kosovo for an indefinite time due to concerns about the actions of the Provisional Government that have increased tensions and instability, limiting the United States’s ability to work productively with Kosovo on common priorities.

We remain committed to advance the common interests of the United States and the people of Kosovo. Our relationship with Kosovo is based on a common goal: strengthening peace and stability as the basis for mutual economic prosperity. Unfortunately, recent actions and statements by the Prime Minister in office Kurti have presented challenges to the progress made over many years, ”the statement said.

The US adds that it remains committed to strengthening peace, stability and economic prosperity in Kosovo, and hopes that in the future conditions will be more appropriate.

The strategic dialogue aimed at strengthening economic and diplomatic ties to the benefit of the American and Kosovo people. We hope to continue with such efforts in the future when appropriate. We know that this is a prioritized goal by the people of Kosovo ”, concludes the statement.

Tensions between the US and the Prime Minister in office Albin Kurti have increased after the latter’s comments to the Constitutional Court that “it is functioning as a political shadow of the opposition”. These comments have been criticized by the US loaded job in Kosovo, Anu Prattipati.

“We are disappointed by the recent actions and statements of the Prime Minister in office Kurti, which have increased instability and uncertainty in Kosovo. These actions undermine the political process, weaken Kosovo institutions and exacerbate inter -ethnic tensions. Let me be clear, any action that weakens political and economic stability is a serious challenge for our partnership,” the US diplomat said.

In the last ruling, the Constitutional Court of Kosovo has banned MPs from taking action to conduct any procedure for the formation of the new Government of Kosovo until September 30, due to the stalemate created by the election of the Vice President of the Assembly by the Serbian community.
