The US plans to sell arms to Israel for eight billion dollars

According to information published by the Axios server, the sale should include ammunition for fighters and combat helicopters, artillery shells and bombs and small-diameter warheads. This transaction must now be approved by both chambers of Congress, reports Reuters.

The American administration has been facing protests for months demanding an embargo on the sale of arms to Israel, but so far they have not affected American Middle East policy in any way. Washington continues to insist that it is only helping its ally to defend itself against Iran-backed militant groups Hamas and Hezbollah and the Yemeni Houthis.

The war in Gaza began with a terrorist attack by Hamas on October 7, 2023, during which 1,200 people were killed and another 251 were taken captive. Israel’s counter-offensive is internationally criticized for the fact that, in addition to causing more than 45,000 casualties, it drove almost all residents of Gaza from their homes and brought the region to the brink of famine. Because of this, he faces international accusations of genocide or collective punishment of Palestinians.

This international criticism is also directed at the USA as Israel’s main ally and arms supplier. Washington has also vetoed all resolutions on a cease-fire in Gaza since the beginning of the conflict in the UN Security Council. It is not expected that the return of Donald Trump to the White House, which will take place on January 20, should change anything in this situation. Biden and Trump have strong support for Israel.
