“Soldiers of the Timur special forces continue to operate in one of the parts of Pokrovsk in the Donetsk region, which is important from the point of view of logistics on the front line. Fierce fighting is taking place here with the Russian occupiers,” Ukrainian intelligence HUR said.
She also published a video, which is a compilation of footage that is supposed to prove the deployment of the unit in Pokrovsk. When the footage comes from, however, cannot be independently verified.
However, as the analyst Milan Mikulecký pointed out in the Unnecessary War podcast, relying on the special forces to turn the situation around would be too optimistic. “Special forces do not have supernatural abilities to solve any crisis,” said Mikulecký.
The intelligence does not want to inform about exactly where and in what number the special units are operating. “Due to the security of the units involved, the details of the operations are not being published at this time,” the intelligence agency said.
The group of specialized forces Timur took the name after its commander, who uses this military nickname. He himself attracted considerable attention with his hussar act, when on August 24, 2023 – on Ukrainian Independence Day – he and his comrades raised the Ukrainian flag on the territory of the Crimean peninsula, which Russia has occupied since 2014. According to estimates, the unit numbers 500 to 1,500 men.
