However, the Azerbaijani authorities stated that, according to the first results of the investigation, it was really the Russians who shot down the plane, as evidenced by pictures taken shortly after the plane’s crash, which show small and large holes in the structure. These are created when an air defense missile explodes next to its target, because the fragments have a better chance of hitting it.
It is not the first time that a civilian plane has become the target of Russian fire. On July 17, 2014, Russian-backed separatists in Donbas also shot down a Malaysian Boeing 777-2H6ER, also known as flight MH17. All 283 passengers and 15 crew members died on board at that time.
