The Romanian Constitutional Court confirmed the result of the first round of presidential elections, the second will be held this weekend

The verdict put an end to the uncertainty prevailing since the Constitutional Court on November 28 ordered a recount of the votes cast in the first round, in which pro-Russian NATO critic Calin Georgescu surprisingly succeeded on November 24.

The court decided unanimously to recount the votes after a complaint about the vote by one of the smaller unsuccessful candidates. According to experts and politicians, there was a suspicion that the result of the election could have been influenced by foreign interference, which was indicated by the unprecedented disparity between the polls and the voting results. Romania is an ally of Ukraine, which is facing a Russian invasion, Reuters reminds.

On December 8, the winning candidate Georgescu will face Elena Lasconi, head of the center-right opposition group Save Romania, who only reached the second round with a very narrow lead of 3,000 votes over the third-placed Social Democratic Prime Minister Marcelo Cioalacue.

Parliamentary elections were also held in Romania on Sunday, December 1, in which the governing Social Democrats (PSD) won with 26 percent of the vote after almost all votes were counted, but far-right parties won a third of the seats in the new legislature. The Union for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) finished second with 19 percent. Two other extreme right-wing parties should also get into the parliament, writes the Romanian press on Monday.

Who will form the government will ultimately depend on who wins the presidential election, as the president appoints the prime minister based on the parliamentary majority, Reuters reminds.
