The driver’s license of 666 thousand motorists will expire next year

According to Jemelka, the number of forfeited documents will be significantly higher next year than this year, when the validity of the license of almost 433 thousand motorists expired.

In 2025, a total of 666,427 driving licenses will expire in the Czech Republic. The authorities in the Central Bohemia region will have the most work, where the validity of the documents of almost 95,000 drivers will expire. It is followed by the South Moravian Region with more than 74,000 expiring documents, followed by the Moravian-Silesian Region and Prague. Most exchanges will concern drivers over 61 years old, who will make up a third of the applicants.

During this year, according to statistics from the Ministry of Transport, 432,734 driver’s licenses expired. At the beginning of December, there were still over 91,000 of them left to exchange.

Drivers can apply for a replacement no earlier than three months before the expiration date. For the exchange, it is necessary to present a valid identity document and a current driver’s license.

Driver’s licenses are exchanged by all authorities with extended powers, regardless of the applicant’s place of permanent residence. It is possible to apply for an exchange in person at the office or electronically through the Transport Portal.

As of January 1, 2024, thanks to an amendment to the Road Traffic Act, it is not mandatory to have a driver’s license with you when driving, but nothing has changed about the obligation to possess it as a driver.
