The Canadian Prime Minister met Trump for dinner after the tariff threat

The meeting between Trump and Trudeau at the Mar-a-Lago club, which has been the ex-president’s base in recent years, was not announced in advance. The American and Canadian media reported on him last night with reference to their sources, one of the participants then published a photo from the restaurant on the social network X. Trudeau is the first leader from the G7 group of rich economies to meet the winner of the American presidential election.

An informed person told the AP agency that the dinner lasted three hours. The unnamed official said that the two leaders talked about a number of topics, including trade and security of the common border, but also Ukraine and the Middle East. Several people nominated for the emerging Trump administration were also at the table, including possible Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick or National Security Advisor Mike Waltz.

Trump has promised tariffs on goods from China, Mexico and Canada

In a statement on his Truth Social platform, Trump wrote that the “very productive meeting” was about trade, energy and drug smuggling into the US. According to him, Trudeau has pledged to help the US end its problems with illegal drugs. A few days ago, Trump threatened Canada and Mexico with a 25 percent tariff precisely because of drugs coming to the US and also because of illegal migration.

In a brief statement to the media before his departure from Florida, Trudeau described the meeting with Trump as excellent. Before the trip, he told reporters that Trump is serious about his threats and that there is a need to talk to him. “It is our responsibility to point out that this would not only hurt Canadians … but would actually raise prices for American citizens and hurt American businesses and industry,” the AP quoted her as saying.

The prevailing opinion among economists is that the tariffs proposed by Trump would increase the cost of living for Americans, whose increase in recent years was one of the main topics of the recent election. However, the incoming president constantly highlights business fees and shows that he will use them even more forcefully than in his first term.

Today on the Truth Social network, he also said that China, Russia, India and other countries in the BRICS group “will face 100 percent tariffs” if they do not abandon their project of strengthening financial integration. “We demand a commitment from these countries that they will not create a new BRICS currency or support any other currency as a replacement for the mighty US dollar,” the incoming US president declared.
