“We have dozens of people with gunshot wounds,” Truman Fitzgerald from the local police confirmed to CNN television, adding that at least four of those shot are life-threatening. Regional news servers put the number of injured at at least 21.
The incident took place around 11 p.m. local time in the sought-after Five Points South entertainment district, where numerous bars, restaurants and shops are located. According to investigators, the shooting took place outside on the sidewalks, not indoors.

According to Fitzgerald, the police have not yet arrested any suspects. It is not even clear what could have been the motive of the tragedy. Investigators are investigating whether the shooters fired at the victims from a car or approached them on foot.
Detectives have asked restaurants in the area to provide them with all the footage from the security cameras. They also urged witnesses to the event to report to the police with any relevant information.
“Rest assured that we will do everything in our power to identify and apprehend those responsible,” Fitzgerald emphasized. According to him, mass shootings have “more to do with culture than with criminality”. “We are witnessing many disputes that are resolved with bullets,” he added.
