The authorities had previously warned residents of a tidal wave and strong winds. They also advised them not to walk along the coastal paths and not expose themselves to danger when photographing and filming the rough sea.
Tenerife is the largest of the seven Spanish Canary Islands, located in northwest Africa. Especially in autumn and winter, large waves hit the western and northern coasts of the islands due to storms in the Atlantic.
