Powerful storms hit Greece, over 22 thousand lightnings in 24 hours

Greece has faced a strong wave of bad weather, which has caused flooding, property damage and power outages in some areas of the country.

According to the Greek Meteorological Service, about 22,000 lightning strikes were recorded within 24 hours in Crete and the southern Aegean Sea.

The worst hit by the storms was Crete, where intense rains flooded roads, damaged homes and caused problems in the electricity supply.

Damage has also been reported on significant areas of agricultural land, while the authorities are assessing the extent of the losses.

According to meteorologists, the rains have continued for several hours, while the atmospheric conditions are expected to gradually improve.

Crete, Greece’s largest island and an area with significant agricultural activity, remains the focus of authorities due to the effects the storms could have on production and crops.

The consequences of bad weather have not been limited to Crete. On the island of Rhodes, a German tourist died after being struck by lightning, while her husband suffered minor injuries.

Greek authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess the damage to infrastructure, the road network, the energy system and the agricultural sector, after one of the most intense episodes of storms recorded this season in the south of the country.
