The North Atlantic Council gathered today in KFOR format, together with troop-contributing partners, for a discussion with KFOR Commander, Major General Özkan Ulutaş.
In his final briefing to the Council, which he attended virtually, Commander Ulutaş provided an update on KFOR’s ongoing efforts to help maintain a safe and stable environment for all citizens of Kosovo, as well as guarantee freedom of movement.
These efforts are carried out within the framework of Resolution 1244 of the United Nations Security Council of 1999, in close coordination with the Kosovo Police and the European Union Mission for the Rule of Law in Kosovo (EULEX), in their respective roles as primary responders in the field of security.
The commander also shared his evaluations on the ongoing process of optimizing the presence of KFOR, which comes as a result of the continuous improvement of the security situation in the country. This process aims to ensure that the mission remains fit for purpose, is based on conditions on the ground, is implemented incrementally and is fully reversible should security developments so require.
NATO emphasizes that KFOR will remain adequately equipped, trained and organized to implement its long-term UN mandate. The mission will maintain the necessary capacities, readiness and flexibility to deal with a wide range of possible security scenarios.

NATO also continues to strongly support the EU-facilitated Dialogue for the Normalization of Relations between Belgrade and Pristina, as a framework for resolving outstanding issues, while respecting the rights of all communities.“, it is stated in the communique of the Alliance.
Major General Özkan Ulutaş is expected to complete his second term at the head of KFOR in mid-October. He will be succeeded by Major General Roberto Vergori from Italy.
