The expert of international relations, Mentor Beqaj, has assessed that the success of the List of Students in Serbia constitutes an exceptional case study from the perspective of political science, but has emphasized that this does not mean a significant change in Serbian policies towards Kosovo or the region.
Invited to the show “3D” with Alban Dudushin, Beqaj said that the Serbian student movement has successfully transformed itself from a social mobilization into an organized political force, challenging a consolidated regime that controlled numerous political and institutional resources.
However, according to him, the developments in Serbia should be seen from different perspectives, since internal political changes are not necessarily reflected in the approach to Kosovo.
“From the point of view of political science, it is a spectacular organization how a movement that comes from social mobilization transforms into a political movement and succeeds in overthrowing a consolidated political regime, which controlled all the resources and used them for political results. It is an outstanding organization of the Student List“, said Beqaj.
He also praised the organization model of this movement, emphasizing the role of university plenums in the selection of candidates.
“The form of organization of this movement, with the university plenaries that voted for the list of 250 people, is a very interesting case to study“, he said.
However, Beqaj underlined that from the Albanian perspective, the result of the elections in Serbia should not be seen as a major political change in relation to Kosovo.
“It depends from which point of view we will look at the developments in Serbia. If we look at them from the perspective of an Albanian, we will understand that some Serbs have won over some other Serbs. This does not constitute any big change either in relation to Kosovo, or to the region or to the worldview they have for foreign policy as a whole“, declared Beqaj.
According to the international relations expert, even the political program of the Student List does not present essential differences from that of the Serbian president Aleksandër Vucic.
“If you read their program, it is almost identical to that of Vucic and it is not that there is any substantial difference“, concluded Beqaj.
