Kurti presents the gendarmerie, a new structure for security and border control in Kosovo

Kosovo is expected to soon have a new and specialized security structure which will be called Gendarmerie. The news was announced by Prime Minister Albin Kurti during a media conference where he emphasized that the country is facing numerous attacks, especially in the north.

The Gendarmerie will have a clear mandate to secure the land, water and air border lines in the entire territory of Kosovo, operations against terrorist groups and armed groups including those of a paramilitary character, preventing and combating all types of cross-border smuggling both with goods and immigrants, managing high security risk situations as well as securing critical infrastructure. The gendarmerie model is proven European practice“, said Kurti.

Kurti stated that the establishment and functioning of the gendarmerie will be done by a special law, which will be voted on in the Assembly of Kosovo in the next legislature.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Xelal Sveçla clarified that this structure will help the police to focus more on public order. According to him, this model is a proven European practice that will guarantee a fairly quick response to threats.
