The acting Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, and the head of the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), Lumir Abdixhiku, have reached an agreement that paves the way for the formation of new institutions.
The agreement was reached during the meeting held today in the premises of the Assembly of Kosovo and was followed by a joint statement to the media.
Within the framework of the agreement, the parties have agreed on Bekim Sejdiu as the consensual candidate for the president of Kosovo. His name was made public by the head of the LDK, Lumir Abdixhiku.
“We were determined to find a solution to move forward and avoid the elections. The talks were not easy, but they were exhaustive. We were committed to a consensual name. During our discussions we agreed on a name, Bekim Sejdiu”, Abdixiku stated.
According to him, the discussions between the parties started on July 9 and continued for several weeks, with the aim of finding a political solution and avoiding new elections.
The agreement between the Vetëvendosje Movement and the LDK is expected to pave the way for unblocking the political stalemate and the formation of Kosovo’s institutions.
Who is Bekim Sejdiu, the consensus candidate proposed for president
Bekim Sejdiu has been a judge in the Constitutional Court of the Republic of Kosovo since 2015. Previously, he served as a diplomat in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Kosovo. He belongs to the first generation of ambassadors of the Republic of Kosovo.
During the period 2008-2012 he served as the Ambassador of the Republic of Kosovo in the Republic of Turkey, while during the years 2012-2014 he was the Consul General of the Republic of Kosovo in New York.
Since 2002, Judge Sejdiu is a professor (assistant) in the Department of International Law of the Faculty of Law at the University of Pristina.
In all his public engagements, Judge Sejdiu has been closely associated with efforts to promote social tolerance, the rule of law, human rights and gender equality, thus being part of the founding group and simultaneously a member of the Council of Professional Researchers of the Kosovo Institute for Policy Research and Development – KIPRED (2002-2008).
In the years 2000-2002, he was also the program director at the Kosovo Foundation for Civil Society – FKSHC.
