Kosovo towards the creation of gendarmerie, Sweden: New structure for security and border protection

Kosovo has started the first steps for the creation of the Gendarmerie, a new security structure that is expected to function under the Ministry of Interior. The minister in charge, Xelal Sveçla, announced that he has signed the establishment of the working group that will analyze the way of organization and operation of this institution.

According to him, the Gendarmerie will have a key role in strengthening security and protecting the territory of Kosovo. Sweden stated that the new structure will guarantee a stronger state presence at the borders and in areas of strategic importance.

He emphasized that the Gendarmerie will also engage in the fight against terrorism, the management of high-risk situations and the protection of critical infrastructure. According to the minister, the creation of this mechanism aims to increase the state’s capacities for the prevention and neutralization of threats to public security.

The Gendarmerie is known as a security force with a military character that also performs police duties. Such structures operate in several countries around the world, including Serbia and France.

In France, the Gendarmerie has broad powers in the maintenance of public order, civil security and crisis management. Forces of this type are also recognized by NATO as part of security and stability mechanisms.
