Jimmy Carter’s funeral took place in Washington

Members of Congress and several Supreme Court justices gathered around Carter’s flag-draped casket under the Capitol dome on Thursday to pay their respects. The funeral ceremony in the Washington Cathedral concluded six days of mourning events held in honor of the late president.

Thursday’s ceremony was attended by all five living US presidents: Bill Clinton, George Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump and Joe Biden, together with about a hundred guests.

Joshua Carter, grandson of the late president, spoke first at the service. “He helped the needy and loved people,” he mentioned in his speech. The main speech was delivered by President Joe Biden. “Carter has never been distracted from his mission to serve and shape the world,” he said. “He had a huge character,” he added. Throughout all the speeches, Carter’s kindness, decency or sincerity were mentioned.

Carter’s remains will be taken to his homeland in Plains, Georgia, where he lived after serving in the White House. In connection with the funeral, President Biden ordered that January 9 be a day of national mourning. At the same time, on his order, flags on state buildings will be lowered to half-mast for 30 days.

Jimmy Carter’s term as the 39th President of the United States began with his inauguration on January 20, 1977 and ended on January 20, 1981. Carter, a Democrat from Georgia, took office after narrowly defeating then-Republican President Gerald Ford.
