It’s all my fault. The Korean minister regrets the declaration of martial law by the president

“First, I deeply regret and take full responsibility for the confusion and concern caused to the public regarding martial law… I have taken full responsibility for all matters related to martial law and submitted my resignation to the president,” South Korea’s defense minister was quoted as saying by AFP.

But he did not say whether he was the one who directly proposed and enforced the declaration of martial law to the president. According to representatives of his own party, he was behind the proposal.

Gradually, almost all members of the South Korean cabinet offered their resignations, including the ministers of finance, justice and education. Prime Minister Han Duk-so called on the ministers to continue fulfilling their duties.

The South Korean metropolis of Seoul was filled by crowds of protesters demanding the resignation of the head of state. The Democratic Party and five other smaller parties have already filed a motion to impeach the president, reported the Jonhap agency. The proposal was signed by 190 opposition MPs and one independent. He was not supported by any member of the government. The opposition plans to present the proposal at the Thursday session of the parliament. It should be voted on on Friday or Saturday.

On Tuesday, Jun Sok-yol declared martial law in the country with the argument that the Democratic Party sympathizes with North Korea and paralyzes the government with its anti-state activities. Since then, many of the closest associates have left the President.
