Under the motto “Not in my name”, citizens from all over Kosovo and other areas are expected to join the protest called by the “Freedom has a Name” platform. In Pristina’s central square “Skënderbeu” they gather to express their revolt against the decision of the Special Court, which on September 16 sentenced the former leaders of the KLA to a total of 81 years in prison, declaring them guilty of war crimes.
After that decision, for more than two weeks, nightly protests have been held in Kosovo. Among other things, the protesters call on the Government of Kosovo to urgently proceed to the Assembly for approval of the amendment and completion of the Law on Specialized Chambers, an initiative of the PDK.
The process is required to be completed before October 6, when the deadline for the election of the president also ends, since in the absence of a political agreement, it is feared that the country could go to early elections.
In addition to Kosovo, protests against the decision of the Special Committee were also held in Skopje, in several cities in the United States, in Canada, Switzerland, Germany and Austria, while on October 10, similar protests were also announced in Brussels.
Today’s rally coincides with the 29th anniversary of the Student Movement of 1997, when protests were organized to oppose the invasion of Kosovo by Serbia and demand the return of students to university institutions, after they were expelled by the Milosevic regime in the early 90s.
