Croatian President Zoran Milanovic has called on the government to launch the parliamentary process for the recognition of Palestine as a sovereign and independent state.
He stressed that this is a necessary step to end the war and the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza. According to Milanovic, the recognition of the rights of the Palestinians for their state is the only way for lasting peace in the Middle East.
He strongly condemned Israeli attacks on civilians in Gaza and plans for further occupation.
The president stated that he would strongly defend Palestine’s recognition as soon as possible. Milanovic said it is time for Croatia to show moral and political leadership in the matter. He asked the Croatian government to act urgently in this regard.
The process must pass through parliament to take the official form.
A growing number of states are joining this attitude. So far, Spain, Ireland, Norway, Slovenia, and Malta have declared the recognition of Palestine as an independent state. Milanovic demands that Croatia be in line with these countries.
He ended up saying that peace requires bold and fair decisions.
