Azerbaijan sent Russia a protest over the damage to its embassy in Kyiv

The Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the rocket explosion destroyed part of the perimeter wall of the embassy and caused serious damage to the diplomatic complex. No one was injured and the ministry spokesman said that the embassy is continuing its activities.

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev spoke by phone with his Ukrainian counterpart Volodymyr Zelensky. They condemned the attack and Aliyev called it an unacceptable violation of international law, Reuters reported.

He reminded that this is not the first such incident: Russian attacks also hit the vicinity of the embassy in Kyiv in January 2024 and in August this year. The first of them left a large crater near the embassy and the second damaged buildings. The Azerbaijani consulate in Kharkiv was seriously damaged by a raid in March 2022.

Relations between Russia and Azerbaijan were seriously damaged by the crash of an Azerbaijani airliner in which 38 people died after it was accidentally shot down by Russian air defense in December 2024. Russian President Vladimir Putin called it a “tragic event”; last month, during a meeting with Aliyev, he promised compensation to the affected.
