A six-month-old baby in the USA was almost eaten alive by rats. The father will serve 16 years

The case should have happened already in September of last year, when thirty-two-year-old David Schonabaum found his six-month-old son early in the morning with serious injuries caused by rats overnight. According to the Daily Mail, investigators counted over 50 different bites on the child who was sleeping in his crib.

The child was bitten on the forehead, cheeks, nose, thighs, feet and toes. Parts of the fingers on the right hand were also lost, from which, according to the police, bones could already be seen. The child lost a large amount of blood, due to which he was in danger of going into shock and death.

Amputation was necessary

After being transported to the hospital, the child was airlifted to the city of Indianapolis, where a team of specialists fought for his life. The child survived the terrible experience, but the doctors had to amputate several fingers, and the child will bear the consequences for the rest of his life.

At the end of last month, the child’s father was convicted of three crimes related to child neglect and child endangerment. On Wednesday, October 2, he then heard the verdict, which punished him in the maximum possible amount. He will spend 16 years behind bars.

They said they didn’t hear the cry

At the time of the incident, there were a total of three adults in the house. In addition to the child’s father, his mother Angel Schonabaumová and aunt Delania Thurmanová. Charges were also brought against both women, with the child’s mother already pleading guilty to criminal neglect and awaiting sentencing. Thurman got a two-year suspended sentence from the court.

According to Anna Gray of the Evansville Police Department, all the accused made the excuse that they did not hear the child’s cry.

At the same time, the house was literally infested with rodents, which were attracted to the mess around and inside the property. Even in the room of the bitten child, leftover food should have been thrown.

At the same time, a few days before the incident, employees of the Department of Services for Children (DCS), who were alerted by the school, visited the problematic household. Delaina Thurman’s two children complained at school that rodents had bitten their legs during the night. However, their mother denied it when the officials visited and stated that there was a normal number of mice in the household.

All the children in the household were placed in foster care, where the bitten baby also went after being released from the hospital, said Gray from the local police department.
