Di Gioia was originally from Rome, but lived for years in France, where his wife is from, whom he married in 2013. He studied economics and business at La Sapienza University in Rome. The tragedy took place on Sunday at the Sataya Resort hotel. According to Italian media, Gianluca Di Gioia was snorkeling with his friend, 69-year-old Giuseppe Frappani, approximately 50 meters from the beach, when the shark approached them and attacked the younger man. The elder tried to save him and drive the shark away. In vain. Although the animal turned around, it immediately attacked both of them.
Frappani suffered injuries that were not serious. Gianluca Di Gioia was wounded in the leg and hand and died of massive bleeding.
The Egyptian authorities had the relevant beach closed and are investigating the incident.
