More than 1,500 people are stranded in Greece after a bomb alert on a cruise ship

A bomb threat against a cruise ship managed by an Israeli company has prompted a security operation at the port of the Greek island of Syros after an unidentified person claimed an explosive device had been planted in the ship’s hull, Greek authorities said.

The Panamanian-flagged Crown Iris, managed by the Israeli company Mano Maritime, was about to set sail for Haifa with 940 passengers and 597 crew members on board when the threat was received.

Coastguard personnel, assisted by an explosive detection dog and a private diver, searched the vessel while a specialist coastguard unit was dispatched to the scene. The first checks did not find any explosive devices.

Coastguard specialists are expected to arrive at 21:30 (19:30 GMT) to carry out further inspections before the ship continues sailing.

Meanwhile, at least seven flights in Europe received bomb threats today, causing disruptions at several airports, although no explosive devices were detected.
