In the “Zahir Pajaziti” square in Pristina, the protest started the day before continues today against the killing of women. Hundreds of citizens also gathered on Wednesday to demand justice for Arlinda Zekajn and all the women killed in Kosovo, where moments of tension were also recorded. The organizers demand institutional accountability after the reported murder of the 49-year-old woman in Peja.
“We will block the institutions because it is the last moment for this state to be accountable. We will continue to protest until our demands are met,” they declared. “We ask for national organization and solidarity, for safety and freedom for living women and justice for murdered women” – it is stated in their announcement. Similar protests were also announced in Ferizaj.
The protesters demand the investigation of the actions of the responsible institutions, the dismissal of the officials who did not act on the case of Arlinda Zekaj and measures for the protection of women. The murder of Arlinda Zekaj has caused severe public reactions, as the 49-year-old three days before the tragedy had submitted a letter to the Basic Prosecutor’s Office of Peja, through which she had requested the implementation of urgent measures, raising concerns about her safety.
Today, the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Internal Affairs in Kosovo must submit to Prime Minister Albin Kurti the report drawn up on the actions of the chain of institutions responsible for security and justice, as according to him the event showed that there was clear negligence on their part. Kurti warned that he will make his findings public. Within this year, 8 women have been killed in Kosovo.
