Optimist Kurti for the election of the president/Head of “Vetevendosje” – The decisive weekend for the talks, we have started the contacts

“This weekend will be decisive.” This is what the Prime Minister of Kosovo, at the same time the head of the Vetëvendosje Movement, Albin Kurti, declared while announcing that they have started negotiations with the opposition parliamentary parties to reach an agreement on the election of the country’s new president.

“We have started communications. Obviously, this weekend is crucial to have an agreement so that next week we have a new president or presidents.”

The Constitutional Court decided that the constitutional term for the election of the president ends on October 6. The Vetëvendosje movement and the Democratic League reached an agreement earlier on the new head of state, but 6 of its deputies opposed it and the candidate proposed by them, Bekim Sejdiu, withdrew.

After the decision of the Special Court for the former leaders of the KLA, the Democratic Party of Kosovo, the largest opposition entity, expressed its willingness to discuss the president, but demands that before October 6, the Assembly approves the amendment of the Law on Specialized Chambers in The Hague, an initiative that has been submitted to the government for approval.

While the Alliance for the Future of Kosovo has refused the meetings with Albin Kurti and has requested that 5 requests submitted earlier by it be fulfilled first. Kosovo must elect the president by October 6, otherwise the country will go to early elections.
