Serbia witnessed an important political development in the Balkans. Following the resignation of President Aleksandar Vucic, Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic assumed the interim presidency. Brnabic made history as the first openly gay politician to hold the office of president in the region.
VUCİC RESIGNED, THE DUTY TRANSFERRED TO BRNABİC
Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic resigned from his post on September 27. After his resignation, Vucic announced that he would participate in the early parliamentary elections to be held on October 25. The presidential election is expected to be held by the end of the year.
Following Vucic’s resignation, Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic assumed the presidency in accordance with the Serbian Constitution and relevant laws. Brnabic officially took over his duties at the handover ceremony held on September 28. According to the Serbian government’s statement, Brnabic will hold this position for a maximum of three months until the new president is elected.
A FIRST IN THE BALKANS
Brnabic, who became Serbia’s first female prime minister in 2017, now serves as interim president. With this development, Brnabic became the first person in the Balkans to assume the office of president with an open homosexual identity.
This position assumed by Brnabic is not an elected presidency, but a temporary position that emerged with the constitutional transfer of power after Vucic’s resignation. With the election of the new president, Brnabic’s mandate will end.
HE SERVED IN THREE IMPORTANT POSITIVES
Brnabic stands out as a key figure in Serbia’s political history, serving in all three of the country’s highest positions. Brnabic, who served as prime minister between 2017 and 2024, has been the President of the Serbian National Assembly since 2024. With Vucic’s resignation, he also assumed the position of president by proxy.
All eyes turned to the new presidential election in Serbia. Brnabic’s temporary duty can last a maximum of 90 days and the new president will be determined during this period.
