Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Disaster Affairs and Risk Management Department AKOM announced that Istanbul and the Marmara Region in general are under the influence of the cool and rainy weather coming from the Balkans. Thunderstorms, which are expected to intensify starting from 19.00 on Sunday evening, are expected to continue intermittently until Wednesday evening.
IMM Disaster Affairs and Risk Management Department AKOM shared its current meteorological assessment regarding the cool and rainy weather wave that increased its impact throughout the city. According to the evaluations, the system originating from the Balkans will continue to be effective in the region throughout the week. As the upper atmosphere is cold and the ground level is warm, along with the north-eastern region carrying the humid air of the Black Sea, there will be stormy, lightning and sometimes strong thunderstorms.
Rains intensify on Sunday evening and will continue until Wednesday
According to AKOM data, the rains that continue intermittently throughout the day on Sunday are expected to increase their effect as of 19.00. It is estimated that there will be heavy showers, especially on the European Side, around the Bosphorus, in the northern regions and on the Anatolian Side.
As a result of the rains that are expected to continue intermittently until 20:00 on Wednesday, 30 to 60 kilograms of precipitation per square meter is expected to fall across the province. In northern districts such as Çatalca, Arnavutköy, Eyüpsultan, Sarıyer, Beykoz, Çekmeköy and Şile, a warning was made that the amount of precipitation could reach 60-100 kilograms per square meter, and in some cases exceed 100 kilograms.
Poyraz and north wind rise to storm levels, temperatures drop
The wind is expected to blow from northerly directions throughout the week, in the form of intermittent storms, north wind and north wind, reaching speeds of 30 to 60 kilometers per hour. It is estimated that the air temperatures, which are currently around 20 degrees with the strong wind, will drop to 15 degrees by the middle of the week.
IMM teams are on alert at critical points
IMM units have increased their precautions against the negativities that heavy rain and storms may bring. While the cleaning of grates, grills and streams was completed before the rain, on-duty personnel were assigned outside working hours. Rainwater pumps were checked at underpasses below the elevation level, coastal squares and risky critical points, and intervention teams were put on alert.
Citizens were also asked to be careful and cautious against the risks of storms and floods.
