Serbia is officially heading for early parliamentary elections, which will be held in October or early November.
President Aleksandar Vucic himself gave the news during a press conference with Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš.
Vucic said that he is keeping his word to the Serbian people to give the citizens the opportunity to express their free will.
He clarified that the elections for the parliament will take place before the end of the year, while the races for the presidency will be held separately a little later.
At the end of June, the Serbian president had announced that he planned to resign from the post of head of state to run for prime minister in the parliamentary elections. His aim is to secure a new governing mandate for the Serbian Progressive Party.
The announcement comes at a time when Serbia continues to face ongoing protests against the government. The demonstrations started after the collapse of the shelter at the Novi Sad railway station in 2024, where 16 people lost their lives.
The tragedy caused strong reactions and accusations of corruption, lack of transparency and weakening of institutions.
