Giant carnivorous grasshoppers appeared in different parts of the Kral Yolu location in Çermik district of Diyarbakır. This species, whose Latin name is “Saga ephippigera”, became the center of attention of both local people and visitors due to its size and the sound it makes.
WHEN THEY CANNOT FIND FOOD, THEY LAND TO THE SETTLEMENTS
Giant carnivorous grasshoppers, which are frequently found in fields and forest areas, can sometimes land in settlements when they are short of food in nature.
Mehmet Musa, a licensed tour guide who was traveling on the King’s Road in the region, described the moment he encountered the giant insects: He stated that he saw giant carnivorous grasshoppers here, which he had never encountered before, and that they were quite different.
PROF. DR. SATAR: IT CAN REACH 25 CENTIMETERS HEIGHT
Making statements on the subject, Prof. Dr. Ali Satar drew attention to the physical structure and living spaces of carnivorous grasshoppers. Satar stated that the length of these grasshoppers can reach up to 25 centimeters; He said that the species lives in the high altitude parts of Southeastern Anatolia, Eastern Anatolia and other regions.
“IT IS VERY BENEFICIAL TO AGRICULTURE, WE NEED TO PROTECT IT”
Emphasizing that giant grasshoppers are completely harmless, contrary to their appearance, Prof. Dr. Ali Satar stated that these insects are natural protectors for agricultural lands. Satar made the following warnings to farmers and citizens:
“They have no harm to humans or agriculture. They are beneficial to agriculture. Because these carnivorous locusts eat harmful insects, they are very beneficial to agriculture. Therefore, we need to protect them.”
