“The Strait of Hormuz will be fully brought back under control within the next 30 days,” Arakčí said. “Iran bears sole responsibility for the strait,” he continued, according to The Middle East Eye.
“Any interference or attempts to create parallel structures would further complicate the situation, create additional tension and delay the reopening of this strategically important waterway,” the minister added.
The opening of the Strait of Hormuz is a key part of the preliminary framework agreement between the US and Iran, signed on June 17. However, after the resumption of mutual attacks, Iran again insists on exclusive control of the strait, which is a key waterway for global trade, especially with oil and gas.
In the mentioned document, it is stipulated that Tehran may not charge fees for the passage of ships during the defined 60-day follow-up negotiations on a permanent solution. Iran is to negotiate with Oman, with the participation of neighboring states, the next procedure in accordance with international law. Experts consider the collection of tolls problematic.
Tehran paralyzed shipping in the strategic Strait of Hormuz in response to the US-Israeli strikes on Iran that began on February 28. After that, he began to allow sailing only to certain vessels that obtained a permit from him. In May, Iran confirmed that it collects fees for the “navigation services” it provides to passing vessels. Before the war, however, he did not restrict navigation through the strait in any way.
Iran and Oman said this week that, as coastal states on the Strait of Hormuz, they feel bound to ensure safe navigation through the strait, in accordance with international law, but also with their right to sovereignty over territorial waters in the strait.
