It is a reaction that occurs after igniting a mixture of sugar, baking soda and alcohol. A dark formation that resembles a snake or a large worm rises from the bowl.
A serious accident took place this week in a preschool in the Italian village of Castel di Lama. Its cause was apparently the excessive amount of added ethanol and the insufficient distance of both children from the bowl in which the mixture was stored.
A flame suddenly burst out of the container, which, according to the L’Unione Sarda server, engulfed the two children on different parts of their bodies. The girl’s hair was on fire.
The teachers immediately alerted the medical emergency service, which transported the burned preschoolers to the regional hospital by helicopter. From there, patients were transferred to a special burn center.
According to the Resto del Carlino server, panic broke out in the classroom after the flame broke out. One of the teachers ran out of the room while the others tried to extinguish the fire with water.
The State Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the case as serious bodily harm. It is not yet clear how many suspects there are.
From the available information, it appears that there were four teachers in the class at the time of the incident. The police are questioning them. The classroom where the accident happened remains closed for now.
According to doctors, the condition of the burned children is serious, but the lives of the small patients are not in danger.
