Acting Minister of Justice, Donika Gërvalla, has stated that the political scene in Kosovo must enter a new phase of dialogue and institutional cooperation, stressing the need to overcome political blockades and avoid unnecessary elections.
She said that the experience so far has shown that the lack of political agreements has often led to electoral processes that have not produced major changes in the country’s institutional composition. According to her, the citizens of Kosovo have already given their message through the vote and now is the time for this will to be respected through political responsibility and cooperation between the subjects.
“Even in the past, we have tried with the LDK and others to resolve the issue of the president. We had completely unnecessary elections, which we knew from the beginning that they will not bring any major changes in the composition of the next assembly. Honestly, it’s time I sat down and had a serious discussion and let go of the blocking mentality. The citizen has said his word, for the third time he has said it clearly. The winner of these elections is being seen”she said, adding that currently only the certification of the results is awaited.
Gërvalla emphasized that the next political steps will be determined first within the governing coalition, and then through consultations with the opposition parties, in order to reach a common institutional solution. She added that the negotiation process should be based on goodwill and willingness to compromise, stressing that the political dialogue should take place directly between the parties and not through public statements.
“What will be the steps we will follow, we will first sit down within the coalition and discuss them, and then we will also sit down and discuss with the opposition parties and we will again be committed and engaged to find ways to clarify them. Solution or not, when one enters into negotiations one enters with the will to find a solution… we are interested in discussing with our potential partners without first discussing with the media. The order requires that I be discussed with the people directly“, said Gërvalla.
In this context, she criticized the approach of the opposition, saying that the establishment of preconditions makes it difficult to initiate political dialogue.
“Look, the opposition would do well not to set conditions, because setting conditions is a very bad precondition for starting negotiations. I think that the citizen of the Republic of Kosovo is the one who decides”she emphasized. Gërvalla underlined that politicians should show more responsibility at this stage, focusing on institutional solutions and not on political clashes.
