Greece and Israel have signed a major agreement in the field of defense, worth about 3 billion euros, for the creation of the advanced air system “Achilles Shield”.
The agreement envisages the construction of a multi-layered defense network capable of dealing with missiles, aircraft and drones.
This system will include Israeli technologies such as David’s Sling, Barak MX and SPYDER, along with airspace surveillance radars.
The package also includes a new national system for command and control of defense forces.
According to the Israeli Ministry of Defense, this is one of the largest military export deals in Israel’s history and the largest defense contract between the two countries.
Athens considers the investment part of a larger reform of its armed forces, while Defense Minister Nikos Dendias has stated that rapid technological developments have called many traditional security doctrines into question.
In addition to the main agreement, Greece has also signed another contract of 26 million euros for the supply of anti-drone systems.
The agreement comes at a time when tensions and security concerns in the region remain high, especially in relations between Greece and Turkey.
In this climate, Athens and Tel Aviv are further deepening military and defense industry cooperation, considering regional security a common interest.
With the Achilles Shield system, Greece aims to significantly strengthen its airspace defenses and face the new threats that are rapidly changing the nature of modern warfare.
