“They have big losses. Big. We see that Russian soldiers and North Korean superiors are not at all interested in the survival of these Koreans. They do everything so that we cannot capture them. They even beat them, these are the facts. The Russians send them to the attacks as unprotected as possible,” said Zelenskyj in an evening post on the social network.
“Today there were reports about several soldiers from North Korea that our soldiers managed to capture. However, they were very seriously injured and it was not possible to save them,” he added.
He described the death of North Korean soldiers on the Ukrainian battlefield as “one of the manifestations of madness that dictatorships are capable of”. And he called on China to put pressure on Pyongyang, if it is sincere in its claims that the war should not escalate further.
The North Koreans have massive losses in the battles against Ukraine
War in Ukraine
North Korean forces have suffered massive losses in Russia’s war against Ukraine, White House security spokesman John Kirby said on Friday. In the last week alone, according to him, several thousand North Korean soldiers died or were injured in the battle with the Ukrainians in the Russian Kursk region.
“It is clear that Russian and North Korean military commanders consider these soldiers expendable and order them to launch desperate attacks against Ukrainian defenses,” Kirby said, according to Reuters.
The South Korean intelligence service said that Ukrainian troops managed to capture one of the soldiers that North Korea sent to Russia. However, according to intelligence, the soldier eventually succumbed to his injuries after a few hours.
He had already talked about burning faces
Zelenskyj has already stated that the Russian army is trying to make it difficult to identify fallen North Korean soldiers. According to Zelenský, they are trying to achieve this, for example, by having the Russians burn their faces so that they are unrecognizable.
According to Kyiv and its allies, Pyongyang supports Russian aggression by supplying weapons and in recent months has also sent over 10,000 soldiers to Russia, some sources say 12,000.
News of reinforcements began to appear after the Ukrainian army made a successful foray into Russian territory at the beginning of August and occupied several hundred square kilometers in the Kursk region. The Russians are now trying to push out the Ukrainians with the help of North Korean soldiers. According to Zelenský’s earlier statement, over 3,000 North Korean soldiers have already died or been injured in the Kursk region.
