They went over the Strähnhag saddle at an altitude of 1500 meters, where they were surprised by the winter conditions. Although the planned route led along a well-marked forest road, the road was no longer paved from a height of 870 meters, the Austrian police informed in a press release.
The women still continued up the hill through the snow, which reached up to their knees. After shortening two switchbacks through a steep forest, they were completely exhausted and called the emergency line from a height of 1,210 meters around half past five in the afternoon.
“The winter in the mountains completely surprised the young women, they had a hard time pushing their way up through the snow,” confirmed one of the rescuers according to the 5minuten server.
A mountain police officer immediately went to them, who found the women after about two hours in the middle of a wooded area completely off the road. Immediately after him, the mountain service arrived on the scene and helped the Czechs back to the valley.
Both women refused medical attention and warmed up at the mountain service station in Hallstatt before rescuers took them to their accommodation in Gosau.
