According to AFP, the American president talked about the fact that the Caribbean island will be “gained one way or another”. Earlier on Monday, Trump said that Cuba wishes to conclude an agreement with the United States. According to him, Washington will either close it soon or do what it considers necessary.
This year, Cuba lost its two main oil suppliers, Venezuela and Mexico. In early January, Trump ordered a halt to Venezuelan oil supplies to Cuba after the US kidnapped Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. At the end of January, the head of the White House signed a decree according to which any country that supplies oil to Cuba is threatened with tariffs. This discouraged Mexico from supplying, which, according to President Claudia Sheinbaumová, is still negotiating with the US for permission to import oil there.
The island country is facing one of the worst economic crises in recent decades. Due to the lack of oil, Cuba had to introduce a number of restrictive measures and significantly reduced basic services. In addition, the island is dealing with daily power cuts. On Monday, according to the agencies, all of Cuba again found itself without electricity supplies when the distribution network failed.
In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly expressed himself about Cuba. He said, for example, that the Cuban government will fall very soon. He also stated that there could be a “peaceful takeover of Cuba” by the United States, before adding that it “might not be a peaceful takeover.”
