The accident happened near Michaelmas Island, about 400 kilometers southeast of Perth in the state of Western Australia, where a 35-year-old man was fishing underwater with his family.
The rescue service received a report of a shark attack at 11:25 a.m. local time (5:25 a.m. CET) and the man with serious injuries was then brought to shore by boat. But they could not revive him there, the police said in their statement.
This is the third fatal attack in a short time. On May 24, a shark attacked a 39-year-old fisherman at Kennedy Shoal in the northern Australian state of Queensland, who succumbed to his injuries. On May 16, a shark bit a 38-year-old man at Horseshoe Reef near Rottnest Island, about 30 kilometers west of Perth. The victim was taken to the shore, but he could not be revived either.
Ocean temperatures are changing migration patterns
There are about 20 shark attacks in Australia every year, most of which are not fatal. Almost 1,300 incidents with these predators have been recorded on the continent since 1791, of which more than 260 ended in death.
Australian scientists believe that the numerous shoals in the seas and rising ocean temperatures are changing the migration patterns of sharks, which could contribute to the increase in the number of attacks.
