The President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has signed the decision to extend for another year the national emergency regarding the Western Balkans. Through this official announcement, which will be transmitted to Congress and published in the Federal Register, Washington confirms that the situation in the region, characterized by widespread corruption and efforts to undermine post-war agreements, continues to pose an extraordinary threat to national security and American foreign policy.
This decision follows a series of executive orders undertaken by US heads of state over the past 25 years, reflecting a steadfast stance against destabilizing factors.
“The actions of persons who threaten the peace and international stabilization efforts in the Western Balkans continue to pose an unusual and extraordinary threat to the national security and foreign policy of the United States. Therefore, the national emergency should continue in effect beyond June 26, 2026,” it says in the whitewashed presidential decree.
The national emergency for the region originated on June 26, 2001, when through Executive Order 13219, persons who supported extremist violence in North Macedonia and those who obstructed the implementation of the Dayton Agreement in Bosnia or Resolution 1244 in Kosovo were sanctioned. Later, this framework was expanded to include violators of the Ohrid Agreement.
The latest administrative measure also relies on Executive Order 14140, signed on January 8, 2025. This order came in response to new negative dynamics in the region, where certain individuals and networks have attempted to challenge the territorial integrity of the Balkan states and erode the rule of law.
According to the White House, the 2025 order is specifically aimed at cracking down on those attempting to escape or evade economic sanctions already imposed by the United States Government.
