The USA is fond of the Čagos Islands

According to The Telegraph, Washington’s plan seeks to reach its own agreement to take control of the military base and bypass London. The Reuters agency, which reported on the British paper’s report, was unable to verify this information. Both the White House and the British Foreign Office did not respond to a request for comment.

This plan is one of several options that the White House is preparing in a document offering alternatives to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s intention to transfer the sovereignty of the archipelago in the Indian Ocean to Mauritius, reports The Telegraph.

In April, the British government suspended the plan to return the islands of Mauritius and regularly talks with the US about the future of the strategically important base, writes Reuters.

The Chagos Islands are located in the Indian Ocean and Britain has controlled them since the beginning of the 19th century. The agreement on their handover was initially welcomed by the US, but at the beginning of this year, Trump questioned it and called it “an act of complete weakness”.
