The US has fully renewed sanctions against Russian oil, Ukrainians report

“American oil sanctions against Rosneft and Lukoil remain in force,” said Vlasjuk.

According to the agency RBK-Ukraine, the United States introduced temporary exemptions for Russian oil in mid-March to stabilize world prices, which have risen sharply due to the war with Iran and the blocked Strait of Hormuz.

They concerned “the sale, delivery or unloading of oil or petroleum products originating in the Russian Federation loaded on any vessel,” including vessels blocked by US sanctions.

Officially, the exemptions from the restrictions were supposed to be canceled on June 17, when the American license that eased them expired. However, US President Donald Trump stated that he was “considering” this issue. At the same time, however, he said that he may renew the sanctions soon. “We are in a position to do it soon,” he said.

The Russians earned 42 billion before

The aforementioned license replaced a similar permit issued by the US Treasury Department on April 17, which expired on May 16. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained in connection with both documents that the Trump administration took these steps to ensure access to energy raw materials for the “most vulnerable countries” and to stabilize the global oil market.

However, American actions did nothing to prevent the rise of oil prices or their fluctuations accompanying alternate announcements of an impending agreement or, on the contrary, escalation between the US and Iran. The exemptions also complicated the West’s efforts to deprive Russia of income to finance the war in Ukraine.

Bessent repeatedly claimed that the mentioned measures were not supposed to bring significant financial benefits to Russia. However, according to the analyzes of S&P Global, thanks to the three-month exception, Russia was able to collect additional income exceeding two billion dollars (42.6 billion crowns).
