“The Chinese aircraft carrier Liao-ning has entered the waters near the Bashi Channel and is likely heading to the western Pacific,” the ministry said.
It added that the army remains on high alert and is ready to respond if necessary. The Bashi Channel connects the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean and separates Taiwan from the Philippines.
China has never given up the idea of using military force to gain control over the island, which it considers part of its territory. In the last two years, it has organized three series of large-scale maneuvers in which it used its air force and navy to encircle the island.
