Albulena Haxhiu was elected Speaker of the Assembly of Kosovo with 62 votes in favor, 16 against and 13 abstentions. With this vote, Haxhiu will lead the 11th legislature of the Assembly of Kosovo, resulting from the June 7 parliamentary elections. The constitutive session of the Assembly resumed after more than a month of institutional blockade, while the focus was on the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speakers of the Assembly.
Before the start of the session, the chairman of the Vetëvendosje Movement and acting prime minister, Albin Kurti, declared that the political subjects had reached a political agreement to overcome the institutional impasse. However, he emphasized that the agreement should be translated into concrete votes in the Assembly. “We have a political agreement, we asked for this, but of course the political agreement must also provide us with the numbers, in order to avoid new elections”declared Kurti.
The acting Prime Minister warned that only the constitution of the Assembly and the formation of the Government are not enough to avoid another political crisis. According to him, the election of the country’s president remains a crucial link. “The constitution of the Assembly and the formation of the Government do not avoid new elections, if we do not also elect the President”Kurt said.
He emphasized that the presence of two-thirds of the deputies in the hall is required for the election of the president, describing the provision of this presence as one of the main challenges that the political agreement will face. Regarding the joint candidacy for president, Professor Bekim Sejdiu, Kurti said that the participation of all deputies who are part of the agreement should be ensured or additional votes should be found. “We consider it necessary to have all the MPs of the agreement there, for our common candidate, Professor Bekim Sejdiun, or to have additional MPs“, he declared.
Despite the previous uncertainty about the numbers, Kurti had confirmed that Vetëvendosje would respond positively to the call for the continuation of the constitutive session. “Since we have a political agreement and the chairman of the session, the oldest MP Avni Dehari, has called the constitutive session, we respond positively to it”Kurt said.
