The Russian general was killed in Moscow by the explosion of a booby-trapped device in a scooter

“According to findings during the investigation, on the morning of December 17, an explosive device was detonated on Ryazansky Prospect in Moscow. As a result, the chief of radiation, chemical and biological protection of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation Igor Kirillov and his assistant died,” Svetlana Petrenko from the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation told TASS.

An investigation into the murder case has been launched, Petrenko said according to the TASS agency. According to her, the bait device placed in the electric scooter exploded.

The area around the house was closed. Investigators, forensic experts, criminologists and operatives work at the crime scene. All the circumstances of the crime are being investigated.

“According to eyewitnesses, the explosion occurred when the men were leaving the house. Most likely, the explosive device was built into a scooter standing near the house. In the house itself, the entrance door was kicked in and the glass was broken. The general’s official car was also damaged,” wrote the Baza telegram channel.

Reuters said it could not independently verify the information.

The attack occurred less than 24 hours after the Ukrainian prosecutor’s office accused Kirillov in absentia of using banned chemical weapons in Ukraine. According to an investigation by the Ukrainian SBU counterintelligence, chemical weapons have been used in more than 4,800 cases since the beginning of the large-scale invasion, the Kyiv Independent website wrote on Monday.

The explosion took place on the ground floor of a residential building on Ryazanské Prospekt, while there is no gas supply in the building, Kommersant wrote.

“The murder of the chief of radiation, chemical and biological protection in Moscow confirms once again that no matter what successes we get on the battlefield, no matter how much euphoria reigns and no matter how much we talk about taking the initiative, the other side always retains the opportunity for painful blow,” the prominent Russian military blog Rybar commented on Kirillov’s death.

“The war is not somewhere out there in Donbass: the explosion on the Ryazansky prospect clearly proves that,” he added.

Igor Kirillov

Igor Kirillov, who was born on July 13 in Kostroma, has been the chief of the Russian radiation, chemical and biological defense of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation since April 2017. Before that, for three years, he led a military academy focused specifically on anti-radiation and anti-chemical protection. He has been working in this area since 2009, when he gradually held increasingly higher command positions. He devoted his entire professional career to anti-radiation and anti-chemical defense, which he graduated from the higher military school in Kostroma in 1991. After its completion, he briefly served as a platoon leader in Germany. In 2007, he graduated from the same field of study at the military academy, TASS reported.
