The remains of at least 23 people were found in three locations in the municipality of Zubin Potok. Acting Prime Minister Albin Kurti explained that in the first location in the mass grave in Kalludër, the remains of 13 people were found and exhumed; in the second location, in Jabuka, mortal remains were found that are suspected to belong to at least four people; while in the third location in Kalludër, the remains of at least six people were found and exhumed.
While declaring that the identification phase of the mortal remains has already begun, Kurti emphasized that the number 23 coincides with what is known as the “group of intellectuals” who were kidnapped and shot by Serbian forces on April 19, 1999.
“The number 23 corresponds to what is known as the group of intellectuals, who on April 19, 1999 were detained, kidnapped and shot by the enemy forces of Serbia, who tried to hide and eliminate the traces of this genocidal crime. But the entire identification process may take several months, so only then will we be able to speak with complete precision about who it is and together with the families give them a a dignified farewell and from a grave with a name and surname”, said Kurti.
The samples of the mortal remains suspected to belong to four people found in Jabuka have been sent for DNA analysis, while preliminary examinations are continuing for the rest at the Institute of Forensic Medicine.
