Trump said this in an interview with ABC News. “He will have to get our approval. If he doesn’t get it, he won’t last long,” said the head of the White House.
“We want to make sure that we don’t have to come back every ten years if you don’t have a president like me,” Trump added. He does not want it to be necessary to do the same in the future as now, or even to let Iran produce a nuclear weapon.
When asked if he would be willing to agree with someone who has ties to the current Iranian regime, Trump said that there are many people who would meet his conditions. But he did not mention any names.
The president justified the current strikes on Iran by saying that Tehran was going to dominate the entire Middle East. “Now it’s a paper tiger, but it wasn’t a week ago. They were going to attack,” emphasized the head of the White House.
Trump was responding to Tehran’s statement on Sunday that the successor to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed on February 28 in the first hours of US-Israeli strikes on Tehran, had already been designated.
“Khamenei’s name will continue”
Iran has not yet disclosed his name, citing that it is still necessary to resolve “some obstacles”. The assembly of experts, whose authority is the selection of the country’s highest spiritual leader, reportedly disagreed on whether this 88-member body, made up of high-ranking Islamic lawyers and clerics, must meet in person, or whether it is possible to skip this formality.
But on Sunday evening, one of the members of the Assembly of Experts said that “Khamenei’s name as the leader of Iran will continue”. This would mean that the choice fell on the son of the current leader, Ali Khamenei. “The voting took place and the result will be announced soon,” assured Hosejnalí Eškevarí.
There was also speculation about the 53-year-old Hasan Khomeini, who is the grandson of the former leader of the Iranian revolution Rouhollah Khomeini, or about the influential Shiite cleric Sadek Larijjani.
Israel has previously threatened to kill Khamenei’s successor.
