Kosovo Internal Affairs Minister Xhelal Sveçla announced in a post on social media to open one of the two bridges that the government in office began building months ago on the Ibar River, which shares Mitrovica in the south inhabited by Albanians and in the Serb -inhabited north.
“Dear citizens of Mitrovica and all of Kosovo, Congratulations New Bridge”Svecla wrote on Facebook, where she posted a photo of the vehicles crossing the new bridge.
Authorities in Kosovo began the construction of two bridges on both sides of the main bridge over the Ibar River, despite all opposition from local Serbs and the reactions of the international community.
But the Kosovo government repeatedly said that the construction of these bridges – one for pedestrians and the other for vehicles – aims to connect North Mitrovica with South Mitrovica and make the lives of the inhabitants easier.
About three million euros have been allocated to the construction of the bridges and the works are expected to be completed in the fall. The open bridge is 51 meters long and 10 meters wide, and has sidewalks of 1.5 meters on each side.
