The election of the President of Kosovo, Haxhiu does not call a plenary session: You cannot vote without 2 candidates

The Assembly of Kosovo has not yet managed to call the session for the election of the president, since according to the president Albulena Haxhiu, the constitutional procedure requires at least two candidates with 30 signatures each. So far, only the Vetëvendosje Movement has submitted Glauk Konjufca’s candidacy, while the other parties have not submitted names.

“There may be requests for an extraordinary session, but there cannot be a session for the election of the president without having at least two candidates. The election of the president must take place no later than 30 days before the end of the current president’s term. The constitutional deadline is March 5, 2026, so we have less than 30 hours until the end of this deadline, which makes the situation more urgent. Invite all the deputies of the Kosovo Assembly who have not yet given signatures to reflect and consider the possibility of proposing at least one other candidate”, Haxhiu said at the press conference.

The constitutional deadline is coming to an end, with only a few hours left until the end of the mandate of the current president Vjosa Osmani on April 4. If the election of a president is not achieved, the country risks going to new parliamentary elections within 45 days.

The opposition has strongly reacted to Vetëvendosje’s approach. LDK has described the situation as irresponsible, while PDK accuses Prime Minister Albin Kurti of pushing the country towards a political crisis in order to consolidate power.

Meanwhile, in addition to Konjufca, Andin Hoti has also been mentioned as a possible candidate, while Vjosa Osmani has expressed readiness for a new mandate, but has not been proposed by Vetëvendosje. The voting process requires two-thirds of the votes in the first two rounds, while 61 votes are enough in the third.
